WHO WE ARE

The New London-Greenwich Rail Trail, Inc. and Western Reserve Land Conservancy are partnering to preserve 51 acres of land along the Wheeling and Lake Erie right of way. This proposed 7-mile rail trail will connect the villages of Greenwich and new London, following a scenic route that nature lovers of all ages could enjoy.

The old railway is owned by the W&LE Railway Col, but was vacated in 1999 in order to utilize the parallel CSX track, which was upgraded between the two villages. NLGRT recently signed a purchase agreement with W&LE, and now the route is poised to take on new use as a multi-use recreational trail, providing exercise and nature access for bicyclists, walkers, runners, skiers, and horses alike.

The New London-Greenwich Rail Trail offers a variety of habitats, from wooded stands to beautiful wetlands. Acquisition of this property will help preserve this scenic ecosystem while connecting the two communities of Greenwich and New London

In January of 2015, NLGRT applied for a Clean Ohio Trail Fund grant through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, to cover purchasing the railway property. We will find out if our grant proposal is accepted sometime in October. Until then, we are accepting donations and pledges for the remaining share of the purchase price.

After 12 years of planning, in May 2019, New London-Greenwich Rail Trail, Inc. purchased this 7 mile corridor. We have

been working on development of the trail since then.

In April 2022 the Ohio Department of Natural Resources approved our grant application to complete Phase 1 of 3 of our

trail project. Phase 1 will finish the trail by doing drainage and surface finishing work. Phase 1 work will be done from Route 162 in New London to Townline Road 79 and from Kniffin Street in Greenwich to Alpha Road.

We needed to get approval from six government agencies before we could start work on the trail. Just recently, the last group approved the project. We plan to begin getting project bids. The work should start soon.
